Your fall garden care should consist of:
- Debris Clean Up - Cleaning up our gardens now will make spring maintenance much easier. Pay special attention to ares where leaves have mildewed or appear to be diseased. This debris should not go into your compost bins. Heavy accumulation of leaves on our lawn can damage the turf. In many cases these leaves can be composted in place with a good composting mower.
- A good time to Scout for Pests is during debris clean up. Inspect plants for for disease and dead wood; identifying problems early can protect your garden from future problems. Any disease and deadwood identified in your garden should be removed immediately regardless of season.
- Perennial Cut Back – Cut back of non-evergreen perennials that don't add interest to the winter landscape. (For more information on what should be cut back or what should be left for spring, give us a call or shoot us an email).
- Removal of Perennial Weeds – Once perennials are cut back, this is the easiest time to remove those weeds that have been hidden or hard to reach during the growing season.
- Protect Plants for Winter* – Aerate and touch up mulch; make sure plants are well watered before the ground freezes; protect broad leaf evergreens and evergreen ground cover from harsh winter wind and sun with an Anti-transpirant or burlap. *This is very important for any plants that have been planted within 18 months.
